Copper and uranium - opportunities for investors
The two metals have not only changed in terms of price. Demand is also completely different today.
Looking back, a tonne of copper cost slightly less than USD 5,000 in 2016. At the same time, a pound of uranium cost around 25 US dollars. Since then, both commodities have become significantly more expensive. Alongside precious metals, these metals are likely to be among investors' favorites. In the case of uranium, the development of small modular reactors could mean a huge step forward for the raw material. Greater efficiency and the highest safety standards could make uranium a major player in the energy transition. Copper is also a metal of the future. For example, around 83 kilograms of copper are used in an electric car, compared to only around 23 kilograms in a conventional combustion vehicle. Analysts largely agree that the fundamentals for copper are positive. Alongside iron, copper was probably the most important metal in the history of mankind. Today, it is an indispensable component in many modern applications such as renewable energies. In 2022, S&P Globals set out in its detailed report "The Future of Copper" how significantly copper consumption will increase as a result of the energy transition and the associated technologies. While global copper demand in 2021 was a good 25 million tons, it will be an estimated 49 million tons in 2035. At the same time, there could be a shortage of ten million tons of copper by 2035. There could also be a shortage of uranium and, as with copper, investors are currently optimistic about uranium. Many are convinced that a uranium deficit is imminent. No wonder, given the renaissance of nuclear power. As an alternative to fossil fuels, nuclear energy is part of the energy transition.
