Sibanye-Stillwater is a leading international precious metals mining company, with a diverse portfolio of platinum group metal (PGM) operations in the United States and Southern Africa, gold operations and projects in South Africa, and copper, gold and PGM exploration properties in North and South America. The company is the world’s largest primary producer of platinum, the second largest primary producer of palladium and a top tier gold producer, ranking third globally, on a gold-equivalent basis, as well as a significant producer of rhodium and other PGMs and associated minerals such as chrome. They are also the globally leading recycler and processor of spent PGM catalytic converter materials. The company reserves stand around 48 Mio ounces 4E PGM in South Africa, +25 Mio ounces in 2E PGM in the USA and additional +15 Mio ounces gold in South Africa. Sibanye-Stillwater is #1 primary producer in Rhodium and produces around 3.5 Mio. Ounces gold equivalent per year.
In addition, Sibanye derives uranium ore as a by-product of gold production from the Cooke operation and keeps it separate from other gold ores by way of a dedicated stream into the uranium section of the Ezulwini gold and uranium plant. The uranium ore is first treated for uranium and then subsequently to recover gold. Production of uranium as a by-product enables Cooke’s gold Mineral Resources to be optimised. Revenue from the sale of uranium is offset against gold production costs, thereby allowing lower-grade gold resources to be mined profitably.
