Copper and zinc together make brass
In the fascinating world of commodities, copper and zinc are among the metals that are exciting for investors.
These two base metals combined create around 60 types of alloys that are in use. If other metals are added, new alloys are created. Brass can be found in many everyday products such as pipes, ship propellers, vehicle construction, precision mechanics, electrical engineering and electronics. There are still plenty of examples. Copper is the gold of climate change. After all, it is used in electric cars and in the solar and wind energy sector. According to forecasts, the trend towards sustainable energy generation will lead to a supply deficit. Copper materials can also be found in superconductors for the CERN particle accelerator. Parts for NASA rockets also use copper and they come from 3D printers. Decarbonization and digitalization will require more and more semiconductors, as they convert, transmit and control electrical energy. Peru, Chile and Australia have the largest copper reserves. Like copper, zinc is an indispensable metal, for example in mechanical engineering, construction and automotive manufacturing. Industry uses zinc as an alloy metal or as a casting. Around 60 percent of global zinc consumption is used to protect steel against corrosion. And a zinc coating makes solar panels and wind turbines more resistant to weather conditions. This is particularly true for offshore wind turbines. In the development of sustainable buildings - with the construction industry becoming increasingly environmentally friendly - the role of zinc will grow. This is because zinc is low-maintenance, adaptable, has a long service life and boasts excellent thermal and acoustic properties.
