Counteracting the earth's overload - raw materials such as lithium needed
The global Earth Overshoot Day has begun again. Humanity is living as if there were 1.7 earths.
Global Footprint Network has been calculating resource consumption for years. Humans consume much more than the earth can produce again within a year. One of the main causes of climate problems is global air travel. Rail transport would be much more climate-friendly, but unfortunately the railroads in this country are becoming less and less reliable and punctual. Incidentally, the Earth Congestion Day in Germany was not at the end of July, but on May 2. The good news, however, is that after years of steady increase (Earth Congestion Day came earlier and earlier), the date has now leveled off, albeit at a high level.
You can see that advancing e-mobility, renewable energies and ever-improving storage options are having an impact. And the green revolution continues. Turkey, for example, has put together a five billion US dollar subsidy package. More electric cars are to be produced. Solar cell systems and the wind energy sector are also to be boosted by subsidies. This development is made possible by raw materials, above all lithium or cobalt, nickel, and therefore battery raw materials.
In South America in particular, lithium mining is not always carried out in the most sustainable way and cobalt from the Congo does not have such a good reputation either. But the sought-after battery raw materials are also available in other places and research is being carried out into new lithium mining options. For example, whether lithium can be extracted with the help of geothermal energy, as geothermal brines contain lithium. However, it is not easy to extract lithium in this way.
