Electric vehicles are visibly taking over the roads. Even electric buses or trucks are already on the road. Another area that may not be as much in the spotlight is electric vehicles in the construction industry. This is an important area, as around 38 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions are said to be attributable to the construction industry. Zero- or low-emission construction vehicles, such as excavators, can therefore save a lot of CO2. So, more and more is being done in the area of emissions avoidance. Research and testing are also being carried out on trains, ships and even aircraft. After all, climate targets have to be met.
For all this to succeed, battery raw materials are in demand, such as the cobalt used in lithium-ion batteries and also nickel. Cobalt is a special raw material because it mostly comes from the Congo, a politically difficult country. But there are also deposits in other countries, such as Ontario. That's where Canada Nickel Company's Crawford nickel-cobalt project is located. A preliminary economic assessment confirms the project's robust economic viability.
When it comes to low-emission driving, platinum and palladium are important. The automotive industry needs palladium. And platinum is needed in hydrogen technology. Sibanye-Stillwater - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10lSR_2ipbQ - has these two raw materials in its projects in the USA and South Africa. The company is also a major producer in the gold sector. In Finland, Sibanye-Stillwater also wants to play in the lithium business and has put out feelers there.
