From a global perspective, platinum demand will increase in the first quarter of 2021, as in the two previous quarters. Government stimulus measures and vaccination programs are responsible. As the World Platinum Investment Council states in its latest platinum report, the platinum market is and will remain in deficit. There is a shortfall of 19,000 ounces of platinum in the first quarter of 2021. 2021 will be the third consecutive year of deficit, it said.
Platinum is increasingly in demand in the jewelry and industrial sectors. Investment demand, on the other hand, has declined somewhat. However, the excellent demand outlook should attract more investors again. Higher demand for platinum will come mainly from the automotive industry, with 24 percent more than last year expected. A supply deficit is also forecast again for palladium due to strong demand from the automotive sector, after all for the tenth year in succession.
Another metal of which there is too little on the market and which is used in the automotive industry is nickel. There is progress in the development of lithium-ion batteries in the electric car sector, and nickel is used as a cathode material in addition to cobalt. So, another important raw material to have on the screen, as well as the companies that own these raw materials.
There is Sibanye-Stillwater - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10lSR_2ipbQ - with platinum and palladium projects in the USA and South Africa as well as gold producing mines. Lithium in Finland is now also on Sibanye-Stillwater's radar screen.
Then there's Canada Nickel Company - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ug3uoh8GQfk -, with a focus on battery raw materials. Its main project is the Crawford nickel-cobalt-sulfide project in Ontario.
