Gold mining ghost towns
A look at the history of earlier gold mines often reveals amazing things.
In Queensland, the controversial Paradise Dam was built between 2003 and 2005, resulting in the flooding of an old gold mining ghost town. Gold was found in 1889 and the town of Paradise was formed. Gold prospectors gathered on the banks of the Burnett River at that time. Today, the lost town of Paradise, which was once a real town with streets and gardens, is submerged under a lake. When construction of the dam began, few remnants of Paradise remained. Nevertheless, archaeologists were there in 2002 to learn more about life during the Queensland gold rush.
On the other side of the world in Brazil, there is a city that was the largest source of gold in Portugal in the 18th and 19th centuries, namely Ouro Preto ("black gold"). In the past four centuries, about 650 tons of gold were produced there. Today, some of this gold is inlaid in churches in Europe and Brazil. This is because in the 18th century, most of the gold brought to Europe came from Brazil. Today, those interested can visit several old gold mines. Many of the old tunnels are so narrow that only children could fit inside.
Today, gold mining follows different laws. Care is taken to protect the environment and the inhabitants located in the mining area, as well as safety regulations to protect miners from danger. Gold is an important means of preserving value, especially in the current uncertain times when paper money is losing value and inflation is rampant. Therefore, gold companies are in the focus of the investment community.
