Platinum has performed extremely well in terms of price in 2025, even outperforming gold and silver in the first half of the year. The total supply of platinum forecast for 2025 is the lowest in five years. Although demand is expected to decline slightly by four percent this year, mainly due to the automotive industry, supply will still fall short of demand by 850,000 ounces. Additional demand is now coming from the jewelry sector due to the high price of gold, and investment demand is also growing. China is the main reason for this.
Platinum is an industrial metal, but around 28 percent of it is also used as a material for the jewelry market. Only about ten percent of gold is used in industry. Ninety percent is absorbed by investments and the jewelry sector. Almost 60 percent of silver is used by industry. Platinum is caught between two worlds. The price rally for platinum was based in particular on the US president's tariff uncertainties. Production volumes are also falling in South Africa, the most important platinum producer, while at the same time investments in physical platinum and platinum ETFs are rising.
Gold will probably always remain the most valued precious metal for storing value. This is because it has proven itself over thousands of years, especially in uncertain times, which can almost be described as a permanent reality. Security-conscious investors are likely to turn to gold. However, platinum should remain in focus. This also applies, of course, to the companies that own these precious metals.
