If global assets have risen year after year, this time it's different. For the first time since the financial crisis, assets have fallen. A loss of more than 11.3 trillion US dollars was recorded in 2022, according to the 14th edition of the Global Wealth Report. Per capita (adults only), that amounts to a loss of $3,198. Europe and North America were particularly hard hit by the losses. In part, of course, it was due to the strong U.S. dollar, as various currencies lost value against the dollar. If it weren't for the effect of exchange rates, global assets would have gone up this year as well. But if inflation were factored in, which is not happening, then it would be another loss year. Indeed, there would then be a loss of real assets of around 2.6 percent. Latin America recorded an increase in assets, but here the currency also appreciated by around six percent against the US dollar. Incidentally, Switzerland leads the field in terms of per capita income, followed by the USA, Hong Kong, Australia and Denmark. Germany is in 16th place.
Financial assets contributed most to the losses in real assets. Non-financial assets, i.e. real estate in particular, proved robust. Losing real assets is not a nice thing. If this had been countered with investments in gold, because gold would have been a plus, this would have minimized the losses. Gold company values should not be forgotten either. Active in the Northwest Territories, Gold Terra Resource's large Yellowknife City gold project (https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/gold-terra-resource-corp/) has been convincing with excellent drill results. A successful producer is Karora Resources (https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/karora-resources-inc/). The two gold mines in Western Australia have produced a good 80,000 ounces of gold so far in 2023.
