Last year, 44 percent more electric cars and also plug-in hybrids were sold in Europe than the year before. In the same period, the figures in China rose by only 3 percent. In global terms, 2.3 million electric vehicles were sold in 2019. This was 9 percent more than in the previous year.
The enormous sales figures in Europe are likely to continue to increase, as car manufacturers will have to sell more than two million e-vehicles by 2021 to avoid fines. The CO2 limits are to blame. After all, there are about 80 models to choose from in Germany. This is second only to China in the world in terms of brand diversity.
The share of German car manufacturers worldwide was around 18 percent in 2019 but could rise to 29 percent by 2024 according to a study by McKinsey. Germany could even become the world's leading producer and oust China from the throne. There is also a lot of work being done on the production of the necessary batteries, with capacities set to increase. However, nothing will work without the necessary raw materials.
The cobalt-nickel projects of Canada Nickel, for example, are equipped with raw materials for electromobility: https://www.commodity-tv.com/play/newsflash-with-skeena-resources-canada-nickel-and-corvus-gold/. The company owns one of the largest nickel-cobalt-palladium projects, the Crawford project, located in Ontario.
The lithium used in the lithium-ion batteries is in high demand and, at Millennial Lithium, for example, is available in two properties: https://www.commodity-tv.com/play/research-news-with-millennial-lithium-corvus-gold-and-mag-silver/. These are located in Argentina, although the Pastos Grandes Lithium project is already well advanced.
