Fuel cell technology is particularly suitable for use in transport solutions. Trucks, buses, ships, trains and aircraft could thus make a decisive contribution to accelerating the energy turnaround. Away from fossil fuels, this is Germany's motto and to this end the country is relying on a national hydrogen strategy - and wants to become the world's number one in fuel cell vehicles. This is part of the Post-Covid-19 economic stimulus package.
Germany has introduced the world's first hydrogen-powered fuel cell trains. Platinum plays a central role in fuel cell technology. Without it it is not possible. Molecules of hydrogen and oxygen are combined. A platinum catalyst is used to generate electricity.
One of the major platinum and palladium producers in South Africa and in the USA is Sibanye-Stillwater. The company is also a gold producer, which is good business at the current gold price.
For hydrogen vehicles, similar to electric vehicles with battery supply, corresponding "filling stations", i.e. the infrastructure, so to speak, must be created. But Germany is also close to becoming the leading producer of electric vehicles in the field of electromobility. For this green form of mobility, lithium-ion batteries also need raw materials such as lithium.
For example, Millennial Lithium, which is in high demand, has its lithium projects in Argentina, an excellent lithium region. Millennial Lithium has an advanced project with Pastos Grandes.
