Nickel was discovered in 1751 and cobalt in 1735. By far the most nickel is produced in Indonesia today. The path to clean energy systems will greatly increase the demand for nickel and cobalt. If more nickel is in the batteries, then the energy density increases, and the costs decrease. Indonesia now wants to use its abundance of raw materials, especially nickel, to become an industrial heavyweight in the electric car sector. Indonesia's goal is to be one of the ten largest economies in the world by 2030. Thus, Indonesia has already changed its investment activities in order to strengthen its own economy with the processing of nickel in the country.
In Southeast Asia, Indonesia is already the most economically powerful country. Germany needs large quantities of nickel, and it has become apparent that China is already eyeing Indonesia's nickel wealth. From nickel mining to processing, the nickel market is already largely in China's hands. China's lead is so not without, other countries such as Germany have to look around to get enough nickel. Indonesia is an archipelago of islands about five times the size of Germany. The island of Sulawesi in particular is rich in nickel resources. The nickel reserves alone are estimated at 21 million tons, about as large as in Australia. In the case of cobalt, most of the battery raw material comes from the Congo, namely almost 70 percent of global production. Indonesia ranks second among the cobalt-producing countries.
But nickel and cobalt are also available in Canada, for example at the Canada Nickel Company - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/canada-nickel-company-inc/ . Its Crawford project is one of the largest nickel deposits in the world, and it is also likely to become one of Canada's largest carbon storage facilities.
In South America, Green Shift Commodities - https://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/green-shift-commodities-ltd/ - explores and develops battery raw materials, including vanadium, phosphates, nickel, lithium and, in addition, uranium.
